Consumerism
As a kid I've always felt the need to fit in. The best way to do that for me was to beg my parents for really expensive toys and to show off my new gadgets. Researching the topic of consumerism I've been extremely interested in the way our culture has now developed into a mentality of buy, buy, buy in order to feel successful, or in order to find some sense of temporary happiness. People are blindly consuming and it takes us into the business of advertisements. How the constant ads that we see everyday are used to manipulate us.The line of need and want is starting to blur and its important that as Americans in a world surrounded by material goods take a step back and ask ourselves if we really need that.

Zine Page
So this collage is surrounded by consumerism. I wanted to focus mainly on how because of our drive to consume it has influenced our culture to place excessive value on materialistic items. Thats what I tried to display by adding all those name brand/designer companies and a big money sign in the middle
This zine was created on our field trip to The Museum of Contemporary Art where we paired up to see the different arts in the museum to get an idea of the different forms of art and to be inspired on how we can use our art to advocate for these social issues. Creating this zine helped my process of learning about your topic because being able to connect it visually and to have ideas on what you want to put means that you understand your topic in a new perspective which is in the visual form. So knowing that these designer brands are examples on American consumerism was a big connection I was able to make. Also just communicating with my peers and being able to explain to them what it is in a way they could understand. |
