Introduction
This semester students from Contemporary Beat created zines, which are self published mini magazines, based off of a social justice issues they felt passionate about. I chose to advocate for healthier eating by going into the topic of consumerism and later into the project shifting towards consumerism affecting the environment. Specifically, fast food influencing the earth’s health. I was put into a group with my peers that had similar topics. Aleks, who advocated for biodiversity, Sergio for climate change, and Nayeli for Unethical fashion. I want people to understand the health effects from fast food restaurants and understand that they it does not only affect them but the earth too. For a portion of the project we reached out to social advocates in our community and we interviewed them, and created stencil portraits. I reached out to Gary Franks, previous owner of Gary’s Organics to speak to him more about healthy eating. I learned that the basic needs in life are consisted of three things. Food, water, and shelter. The social needs in life are status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness. Through the lens of my social topic I made the connection that the fast food industry is meeting our basic need of food, but is impacting American lives negatively.
