The One Where Jospeh Gives Advice
My interview went a whole lot better than I expected. I did a phone call interview with Joseph because he is out of town so unfortunately I couldn’t record it. From the beginning of my internship when I was introduced to Joseph I learned how busy he was. I knew he was a director at SPACES, I knew he lectured, and I knew he was a graduate student. Even from that I was extremely impressed with all that he does. The work ethic that I saw from my mentor reminds me a whole of my mom and I think that's one of the reasons why I admire how busy he is and all the work he does even outside of SPACES. I really enjoyed to hear his responses about why he comes to work everyday. When I think about my future and the reason why I go to work I hope to have the same answer he responded with. Joseph responded by saying “What makes me come into work everyday is that I really enjoy working with the youth, specifically pre college students. The kinds of work I do is good for the youth and the community” (he said a lot more on the phone I was only able to capture the jist of it) I heard a lot of passion from his answer. He enjoys working with the youth and creating impact. If I ever get asked this question I hope to be able to say with the same passion he did when answering and I hope to feel that way about my co-workers or who ever I work with. Two of my biggest takeaways from the interview would have to be from the last two question I asked. The first was “Why do you think attending college important?” and “What advice do you have for me as a junior is HS as im starting the process at looking at colleges and career exploration?” He was really intrigued by the first question and I absolutely loved his response. “I think that's an interesting saying, I think people go to college expecting to be successful in life to get a job and work and everyone only really thinks about that point. I think college is good because it opens your perspective to the world and allows growth for new points of view and really opens you up to new opportunities of having an open mind and perspective” This to me was an extremely thoughtful answer because that was my view on college before this past month. Being here on internship this past month his response made total sense. I was able to learn about new views and perspectives of topics I never would have learned without going to UCSD and so I think that is awesome how he has that view on college. The advice he gave me was really useful. It made me think of myself. I know that I have general interests but I don't really know what specifically I want to do or study so when my family members ask me I am so quick to give them an automated response of saying a general field of work like “ I want to be a doctor” and Joseph gave me advice to look into deeper studies and look beyond the traditional fields and I think it's really strong advice coming from a successful guy who has gone through this whole process and is well experienced. At first I was really nervous to do this interview but I actually enjoyed talking to him and I am really glad I was able to hear his reponses.
