Project Description
For this project we created podcasts on the upcoming propsitions in CA. Our goal was too inform our audience about our props by giving stories on who it will effect, what it will do, and letting them hear different perspectives from different people.
Project Process
We first learned about how propositions get on the ballot of California. We then look at one the upcoming propositions, Prop 64 (the legalization of Marijuana) did research on it, read and annotated articles, and prepared for a Socratic seminar. After that we did a class presentations on the different props ranging from Prop 51- 67) Once we had knowledge on what each of the props were we voted on the top 4 we wanted to create podcasts on.

Our Pitch
The prop our group got was Prop 63, which is banning guns with high capacity magazines, and requiring strict background checks when purchasing ammunition. Our group struggled for a while trying to come up with a burning question to make our podcast about. I remember sitting and we though about one interesting interview we had at Balboa Park. Where a lad told us about a story when she was sexually harassed and a gun helped save her life. So when we were talking about that interview we asked each other, "How does guns affect domestic violence?" and "What affects will prop 63 have on domestic violence?" We continued to read articles that involved guns and domestic violence. When one certain article stood out to us.
"12 Facts That Show How Guns Make Domestic Violence Even Deadlier"
This article helped us find an interviewee. We got in contact with The Trace by direct messaging them on twitter asking if we could exchange contact with the author of the article named, Kerri Shaw who is in favor in Prop 63, and our group realized it would be interesting if we could find someone who was against 63.

Interview Map & Tape Logs
With our brainstorm sheet looking, we researched for people who are against Prop 63 and for it. We specifically tried looking domestic abuse and how it connects with guns. When researching we stumbled upon an organization called "Gun Owners of CA" we emailed them and scheduled an interview with Sam Parades, who is executive producer.
To prepare for this interview we created interview maps. An interview map is something that guides the interview, and makes it flow in an organized way.

After each interview we would log the tape. That means we would listen to the full interview and write down moments that is interesting and that we could potentially put in our podcast. This made editing a whole lot easier because I knew what I was looking for. The best part of interviews is hearing the perspective from experts, they are so passionate My view on the prop changed periodically because hearing the words from experts persuaded.
Script
We actually created our script once we finished logging our tape. We wanted to grab our audiences attention so we we started off with the two biggest arguments from our interviews. With critique Dr. P pointed out that it too much of a jump, so we added audio from news clips explaining what prop 63 was. The script changed periodically because of some of the roadblocks we ran into, like audio, interviews, and so towards the end while we were getting closer to exhibition day I didn't really follow the script.
Final Product
There was many roadblocks to get to the final product. It took patience, time, hardwork It was stressful a stressful project. A lot of the times it would get unorganized, it was difficult trying to prioritize things because the deadline creeped up so fast and everything felt like a priority. This project took patience. We were one of the first group to use the equipment the recorders, and the mics and the first time we used the mic to interview someone (Sam Parades) the mic didn't record his voice. That meant having to interview him again. The second person we interviewed, who was Kerri Shaw we lost her audio. So that meant having to interview her a second time as well, and when we did we found the audio, but the sound quality was horrible. We relied on Kerris interview because we made the script off of her answers but, since the audio was terrible quality we couldn't use her. We had no other interviews so at that point our group was stuck. We had emailed many other people but never got a response back. As the editor I didn't really know what to do, I tried my best to fix the audio but, it just didn't work. I tried to revise the script but, it was very challenging. So we continued looking for potential interviewees, when we were able to get ahold of Margot Bennet, who is executive director of Women Against Gun Violence. From there we didn't really follow the script. Thats one of the things we were able to do as a group. Be flexible. We overcame lots of obstacles throughout this project and were able to adjust to change.
Exhibition
The day of exhibition was so awesome because I was able to see everything come together and listen to everyones final product. It was also very nerve-wracking but, fun to sit up there and awnser questions people had about the process, and about our Prop. This project helped me learn that it is important to keep up with the deadlines, and that you do not want to fall behind.
