POL script 2015Humanities Evolution Ive evolved as a writer with my ability to show not tell. When writing a story my sentences used to be so plain and bring. Before I used to tell my readers what I saw and told them how I felt rather showing them. Now with some descriptive writing I am able to make the readers see what I could I see and make them feel as if they were there with me. Evidence When first working on my memoir my first draft was only a page long and it was so boring and plain. After a series of critique and studying the writing strategies of Tim O'Brien I was able to revise my memoir so that it had descriptive language Tim O'Brien used. My final draft is about 4 pages long. What caused this evolution? The cause for this growth was when discussing The Things They Carried and his writing strategies. Also the critique I was getting really helped me improve my writing. His writing was very descriptive making it feel as if I were there. When writing I made sure to keep in mind that descriptive writing makes it easier to imagine things. Just like how Tim O'brien did, it was easy to imagine the jungle and the guerilla warfare they had in Vietnam, as if you were there with him. I remember he talked about this part of where his friend died and it was so detailed it was easy to imagine what it looked liked, the trees, the exact face he made, the way the sun was hitting his face. It was crazy detailed, and that what it means to show not tell. Areas for growth as a writer A way I could grow as a writer is to have better hooks. To hook my audience at the beginning so it makes them engaged in my story and makes them want to read on. My plan for that is to read more books and see the way they start their stories to hook their audience or to study the way I get hooked on a book, how does the first chapter make me want to read onward. Also reading will benefit me with with my lots of different writing stuff, my grammar, and language. Just like how reading TTC and a christmas carol improved my writing and vocabulary. Image explanation My image is kind of like a comparison from my writing skills from August to now. Before when I would write it would be so plain and boring making it hard for the readers to imagine, to where the one on the write you have detailed writing of what it looks like, it would be easier for the reader to imagine that. |

POL Panelist Reflection
1. Discuss one new opinion or insight you learned about your peers today. What caused this are opinion or insight? why was was this important or interesting to you?
Something that interested me during our panel that I learned was how everyones POL was different because everyone evolved differently, which is interesting because we all did the same project, same work, yet we all still had different things to say about what we learned, what we are most proud of, or how we want to change. Also I saw genuine curiosity in our panel. Some students just ask question to be a good panel member for the grade and asking questions based off the packet but, some other peers were asking different question aside from the packet.
2. What did you learn about how to make a "good" POL presentation and which caused you to learn this?
For a good presentation I learned that talking at a good pace, eye contact, and speaking loud and confident makes a good prevention. I learned this from Paulina. I heard her clearly, she wasn't looking down at her paper too much, and she didn't go too fast or too slow. From Estella's presentation I saw lots of uniqueness and she had the audience involved which made me really engaged because it was different and unique. Her tone of voice sounded like she was excited sharing her knowledge and thats what keeps the crowd interested.
3. The whole goal of POL's is to get students to share a meaningful learning expericene, one where we can discuss each students strength, passions and how he/she can improve even more. DO you think we, as an audience, helped EVERY student achieve that goal? Why or Why not? What could we do to improve next years panel so that we achieve that goal for every student?
Yes I think we achieved that goal because after every POL giving feedback and celebration showed the presenter what they did good and what they could work on for next time. Also the questions we asked, if they were missing anything we asked question so they could go over that. A suggestion I have is to have at least a couple more days to work because I noticed that a lot of people went up with their scripts and note cards and I think id be awesome if we didn't even have to use them.

POL Presenter Reflection
1. The most interesting question that was asked during my POL was "What was you biggest take-away this semester?" I said when I went to Downtown San Diego and went to help the homeless. I talked to this guy named Alvis, he told us his story of his first day out on the streets. We then asked what is it that he needs most and he responded saying the simple things is good enough for him. Even us just going out to help and thinking about them makes him happy. That it doesn't matter what we come with the fact that we came and chose to help is enough for him and that just made me reflect back to that day and share to everyone what he taught me that its the simple things that matter, that nothing ever has to be big to have an impact.
2. If I were to do my POL over again something I would do differently is to have a comparison picture side by side for my humanities part so that they can witness the change instead of me just telling it to them. Also I should have put my script onto notecards because I was told during my feedback I was nervously playing with my paper the whole time. For physics I would go more in-depth with my process on how trigonometry clicked for me and how the moment felt and why I though the moment clicked so my audience won't be left wondering.
3. A goal for next semester is to once in a while recognize my strengths. Because when reflecting I always notice that I always reflect on things I could work on and what I could do better rather than taking the time to celebrate. Although my top goal is to manage my time better since I'm an athlete always having practice and games, to take advantage of the times I'm free and get my work done. I came across my challenge of time management when doing SCE I've noticed I'm always doing them late. I will challenge myself to put in 100% effort in every activity and homework assignments since I'm always up late rushing through my work to get it done. I will know when I have reached my goal when I get back on my sleeping schedule and when I don't have to do homework late at night because it would have already been finished.
